GRADE 8 SKILLS ROTATION

Life Skills 1 & Life Skills 2
The Grade 8 Skills Rotation courses are designed to introduce our Grade 8 students to as many of the elective disciplines as possible. This will enable our students to make informed decisions when the time comes for them to choose their Grade 9 elective courses. Two different elective groupings have been created, called  Life Skills 1 and Life Skills 2. Grade 8 students will experience the following courses within their Life Skills rotations for a 5 week period throughout the school year:
 
Life Skills 1:
Computers
This is a technology based course that covers the following:
  • The Basic Microsoft Products (Word, Power Point)
  • Internet and web use
  • Digital Publishing and Workspace environment
  • Animation
  • Advanced Keyboarding Skills
 
Health and Careers
This is a technology infused course that covers the following:
  • Education and Career
  • Healthy Living
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Safety and Injury Prevention
  • Substance Misuse Prevention
 
Textiles
The Home Economics portion of  Life Skills 8 consists of 5 weeks of Foods and 5 weeks in Textiles. In the Textiles portion, students will be introduced to hand sewing and the operation of the sewing machine. Students will sew an embroidered pin cushion, samples, and an apron.
 
Foods
The Home Economics portion of Life Skills 8 consists of 5 weeks of Foods and 5 weeks in Textiles. In the Foods segment, students will be introduced to the kitchen learning about the importance of hygiene, Food Safe safety, and equipment use. Working with basic recipes, they will cover the topics of quick breads (biscuits, muffins, pancakes), eggs, milk, cakes, cookies, fruit and vegetables. Labs will compliment the topics covered.
 
Life Skills 2:
Woodworking
This course is an introduction to the environment of design, wood products and plastics technology. Students will be shown how to effectively use some hand and shop power tools, which will develop their skills through the production of small projects for use around the house. They will use a variety of skills, tools, operational safety habits; students will also be introduced to the maintenance of tools. The main purpose of the course is for students to learn how to avoid injury and to work safely and efficiently in a shop environment. Projects are designed so that, upon completion of the course, each student will have some nice projects and build self-confidence. At the Grade 8 level, this is perhaps as important as the skills learned in this area.
 
Metalwork
This course is an introduction to the environment of design, metal products and welding technology. Students will be shown how to effectively use some hand and shop power tools, which will develop their minor and major motor skills through the production of small projects for use around the house. They will use a variety of skills, tools, operational safety habits; students will also be introduced to the maintenance of tools. The main purpose of the course is for students to learn how to avoid injury and to work safely and efficiently in a shop environment. Projects are designed so that upon completion of the course, each student will have some nice projects and build self-confidence. At the Grade 8 level, this is perhaps as important as the skills learned in this area.
 
Art
The Life Skills Art rotation will take 5 weeks. We will complete approximately 4 full studio assignments in a variety of media. We will cover a number of the Elements and Principles of Design. Related lead up work will be done in an Idea Book. There will be one drawing homework assignment per week. Parents will be asked to fill out a comment sheet near the end of the rotation regarding the work their student has completed.
 
Drama
This five-week course is an introduction to activities that include: group participation, trust building, tableaux, mime, movement, and improvisation. Students will be executing small scenarios, in front of their peers, to further their personal growth and confidence. This is a fantastic foundation for students interested in taking Drama 9.
 
Band 8
Students will only take Life Skills 1, as there is not enough room in their timetables for both Life Skills courses and the Health and Careers 8 portion of Life Skills 1 is a required course. Band is offered as a linear course and students enrolled in Band take their Physical Education all year-long as well.
